National Weather Service - Amateur Radio SKYWARN Operations

Amateur Radio SKYWARN Operations • National Weather Service, St. Louis, MO

For a list of the Fall 2011 Spotter Classes Schedule, click here for a PDF version of the schedule.

Amateur radio is a vital part of the National Weather Service (NWS) SKYWARN system.  The instant communication of severe weather reports and other weather information during severe weather outbreaks are an important part of the NWS warning process.

The NWS St. Louis covers 46 counties in Missouri and Illinois. This is known as our County Warning and Forecast Area (CWA).  With a CWA that stretches from Columbia, MO east to Salem, IL, and from Quincy, IL south to Fredericktown, MO, real-time communication across this area can be quite a challenge.

The following are the established frequencies/repeaters that are monitored during times of severe weather. In the St. Louis Metropolitan area direct to NWS on 145.330. Areas north of I-70 on 145.190, and on the Missouri Show-Me Intertie for Central to East Central Missouri and for Illinois.

Weather Spotter Training classes are held in in the spring and fall. For spotter training class information and schedule, click here. To download a PDF version of the Basic Spotter's Field Guide, click here.

Please visit the St. Louis NWS SKYWARN Operations page for additional detail and resources.
